ATLANTA (Aug. 17, 2014) - Jim Cowart, the real estate developer who assembled land that would become Perimeter Center and marked the beginning of plans for Perimeter Mall, passed away at his home Friday, Aug. 15.
Cowart sold the assemblage, and as a result, is credited for being a key visionary who helped create the what now is the biggest business corridor in the north Atlanta suburbs. Of course, Cowart went on to become one of the legends of metro Atlanta's homebuilding industry. The company he founded now is known as Cowart Residential.
Jim Cowart also became a giant in Atlanta's civic community. Just last year, the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce gave Cowart the Zach Henderson Citizen of the Year Award "for his 50-plus years as a visionary who did much to shape North Fulton into the community it is today and as a philanthropist who gave generously throughout his career," as reporter by Hatcher Hurd of northfulton.com
"Most people do not know that Jim donated the profits from the Perimeter Center transaction to 38 area churches. This transaction began the business corridor of North Atlanta," according to his obituary that appears in this morning's Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Visitation will be Monday, August 18, from 2-4 pm and 6-8pm at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, Ga. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, August 19, at 12:00 at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, 2850 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, Georgia. The family request in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mt.
