ATLANTA (Aug. 12, 2014) - Atlanta is home to the second-highest number of former NFL players, and at least one is throwing a huge estate sale at his subsurban Roswell McMansion this weekend.
Later this week, the home of Fred Smoot, a former cornerback for the Washington Redskins and party boat captain for the Minnesota Vikings, will be the venue of an "Important Roswell Estate Sale Of Prominent Member of the Community," according to Atlanta Antique & Estate Liquidators, Inc.
Smoot and his wife Summer are listed as the owners of the home at 8660 River Trace in the Horseshoe Bend development. The home is on the market with an asking price of $1.1 million, according to Zillow. Smoot, drafted in the second round by Washington in 2001, is a likeable player whom Redskins fans still love.
So, Redskins' fans across metro Atlanta likely will show up for Smoot's sale. Items for sale include 10 TVs, a sauna, Jacuzzi hot tub, pool table, a slot machine, one Pepsi vending machine (in Coca-Cola country), professional basketball hoops on wheels and "important Washington Redskins NFL Artifacts Signed Helmets and Footballs."
Based on the way the Smoots' house is outfitted, it sounds like he's been living large since he left football. Smoot was fun to watch on the field, and it pleased me when the Redskins signed him again after he left for Minnesota.
However, just last week, Smootie seemed to go on the attack against Robert Griffin III, in an interview with Washington Post blogger Scott Allen. No word whether Griffin will show up at the estate sale and picks up some memorabilia. Either way, I'd love to get my hands on some of the Redskins' stuff (the same way Smoot got his gloves on Keyshawn Johnson's ugly Cowboys helmet in this photo).
Here's what Smoot told Allen:
“Listen to me: I love Robert Griffin III,” Fred Smoot said after the montage, which included Griffin’s new logo. “I don’t like RGIII.”
“And there’s a difference,” host Chris Miller said.
“There’s a total difference,” Smoot said. “My grandma always told me, ‘If you knew better, you’d do better. Well evidently, this guy don’t know no better, because he continues to do the same thing every offseason...The rise to the top is quick, but the drop, it’s a lot faster. So I want this guy to just focus on playing quarterback, and that’s when Robert Griffin III comes in. Because he can play the game; his mind is just everywhere right now. I just don’t agree with it and I don’t like it.”
